Portlock Galleries at SoNo is housed in the historic Portlock School #5, which was originally built in 1908 and served as an elementary school until the 1950's.

The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  It was renovated in the mid 1990's and was the Chesapeake Museum and Information Center for several years.

With another renovation in 2004, the building became Portlock Galleries at SoNo and marks the redevelopment efforts for all of Historic South Norfolk.
